From London Olympic Podium to Hong Kong Training Hall – World Champion Arsen Julfalakyan Meets with Sports Commissioner to Chart Future of Youth Wrestling in Hong Kong

“Don’t be afraid to lose – be afraid of never truly challenging yourself.” These words came from Armenian wrestling legend, Olympic silver medallist and World Champion Arsen Julfalakyan, who made his first visit to Hong Kong last weekend (July 16–17) at the invitation of the Hong Kong China Wrestling Association . He conducted a one day “Wrestling Masterclass” for local athletes, delivering a powerful blend of technical instruction and inspiration.

Arsen’s credentials are exceptional: three-time Olympian, London 2012 Olympic silver medallist, 2014 World Champion, four-time World Championship medallist, European Champion, two-time World Cup gold medallist – and he currently serves as President of the United World Wrestling (UWW) Athletes’ Commission.

During the masterclass, Arsen stepped onto the mat himself, training side-by-side with Hong Kong athletes and correcting their techniques individually. He focused on three key areas: weight transfer, counter-attack timing, and psychological resilience in competition. One Hong Kong team member remarked: “Watching his moves on video, I thought I understood them – but when he actually took my hand and guided me through the motion, I realised I had been getting nine out of ten details wrong. These two days have been worth two years of training.”

Arsen also took time to speak directly to the athletes: “You have no baggage – you can bravely create your own style.” “Medals are the result, but the essence of wrestling is problem-solving – every time you get thrown, that’s a clue to the solution.” A young athlete said: “He told us, ‘The speed at which you get back up determines your fate in the next round.’ I will remember that for life.”

Beyond the masterclass, Arsen held a separate meeting with Hong Kong’s Sports Commissioner to discuss the long-term development of youth wrestling in Hong Kong. As President of the UWW Athletes’ Commission, Arsen brings extensive international experience in youth development systems. During the meeting, he shared case studies from multiple countries on how to build talent pipelines from the grassroots level. He also expressed his recognition of Hong Kong young athletes’ potential. Both sides explored future collaboration in coach exchanges, systematised youth training, and the introduction of international resources.

The Chairman of the Hong Kong China Wrestling Association Mr.Masoud Niazi stated that Mr.Arsen’s visit was not just about the masterclass, but also an important policy dialogue. The Association has been actively promoting wrestling at the local level, organising community and school training programmes for years. Since 2018, more than 800 participants have joined, and the children’s and youth divisions have achieved encouraging results in international competitions. The Association looks forward to closer collaboration with the government to secure more resources and support for youth wrestling, ultimately elevating Hong Kong to an internationally competitive level.
